Love Delmarva: Accomack County

Community Christian Radio Station

The Bridge Loves Delmarva!

Today we are focusing on Accomack County, Virginia.

Accomack, and…to it’s south, North Hampton…make up what is known as “Virginia’s Eastern Shore”, the southernmost portion of the Delmarva Peninsula.

Accomack is bordered by the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Accomack was named after the American Accawmacke Indians…and was once called The Kingdom of the Accawmackes.

An English voyage landed there in 1603, four years before the Jamestown Colony was founded. Evidently they were welcomed by the 6-thousand native Americans because their chief was given the nickname Laughing King by the Brits.

Much of Accomack County is considered protected lands…and Accomack is, at least partially, home to Assateague Island National Seashore, the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, the Martin National Wildlife Refuge, and the Wallops Island National Wildlife Refuge.

Tangier Island is part of Accomack County. Tangier is a small island of about 700 people, many of them watermen. They’re known for their own beautiful dialect – sometimes attributed to the English, but often considered a hybrid of the Island.

Chincoteague Island is also a famous part of Accomack County. Best known for the Chincoteague Ponies (which actually live on Assateague Island), the town was featured in the 1947 book “Misty of Chincoteague” – and the 1961 film called “Misty”. The world-famous Pony Penning and Pony Swim draw thousands of visitors every summer.

Just south of Chincoteague is Wallops Island. It’s only six square miles, but known world wide because of the Wallops Island Flight Facility, operated by NASA. Wallops is a rocket launch site that supports science and exploration projects for NASA and other Federal agencies. There have been over 16-thousand launches there since 1945.

The Bridge is proud to serve Accomack County, Virginia!

Behind every letter, phone call, and prayer request… There Is A Story!

There’s the single mom who struggles every day to get out of bed because she feels inadequate and at the end of her rope. She wanted you to know that you help give her hope.

There’s the woman whose husband died prematurely and unexpectedly. She said to tell you that some days she can barely breathe, but God has used you to give her breath.

And also the young man who has been clean and sober for 6 months, and he said to tell you thank you for giving him the strength to make the right decision all day long.

They represent a portion of our community, and rely on The Bridge to hear words of peace, songs of hope, messages that help them learn to trust God and to establish a relationship with Jesus.

Thanks to you, The Bridge continues to serve our community as listeners tune in each day and find the “right song at the right time.” God is using the support of friends like you to make a huge impact on our community.
