Choose How To Spend Your Life

David Dunn wrote ‘Spend a Life’ because he had a kid. For the first time in his life, a timer started, and it was counting down the seconds he had left to raise that child. An 18 year (or less) timer where his moment by moment decisions would affect this tiny human’s existence dramatically…

And that got David thinking about the larger perspective of life – Everyone has a ticking clock from the moment they’re born, and some day that timer is going to go off… and then that’s it. That’s all you get. No resets or 5 minute snoozes – it’s done. And that will have been all the chance you got make a difference in the world around you. That was it. The sudden flash in the pan, that mist of vapor in the air we call “being alive”.

So the point of the song is this: Time is our most valuable resource, so let’s not spend it like it’s cheap.

“Spend A Life”:

Everybody’s got a balance
But no one knows how much
There’s no way to run the numbers
No way to count it up
And we’re pouring out our fortunes
In the moments
Both the big and the small
Yea we gotta spend it all

All I have is what You gave
Watching seconds turn to days
I was made for more then just to watch it fly
A few more turns around the sun
Could be hundreds could be one
Show me how to spend the treasure of my time
Show me how to spend a life

I have never seen a tombstone
Say “I didn’t work enough”
Nobody ever heard a father say
“I held my kids to much”
God I wanna run after
What really matters
So remind me when I fall
How a good man spends it all

All I have is what You gave
Watching seconds turn to days
I was made for more then just to watch it fly
A few more turns around the sun
Could be hundreds could be one
Show me how to spend the treasure of my time
Show me how to spend a life

Don’t let me waste it
Don’t let lose it
Don’t let me steal it for myself
No
I know it’s precious
I know it’s priceless
I know my time is flying by

Show me how to spend a life
